Alpbach - The ResortAlpbach is situated in western Austria and is part of the Tyrol province. A beautiful chocolate box resort much loved by the British for it's traditional Tirolean style and welcoming atmosphere. There is even a British Ski Club for the Alpbach visitors. The resort looks south towards the Wiedersbergerhorn where most of the slopes are to be found. It is very much a family resort, not for those who want very challenging skiing on their doorstop, but what skiing Alpbach has is very pleasant and the slopes are a great place to appreciate the gorgeous surroundings. Try and stay in the main village for atmosphere and the lively, but low key apres ski provided by a number of warm welcoming bars and restaurants. |

| About The Mountain |
|
 |
|
|
Alpback Ski
Alpbach is part of the Tyrol which has over 115 ski areas and 3,875km of runs. Within the region there are five glaciers that all host both winter and summer skiing. The highest mountains in the Alpbach Valley are: Galtenberg (the largest) (2425 m) , Sonnenjoch (2287 m) , Standkopf (2228 m) , Wiedersberger Horn (2128 m) , Schatzberg (1900 m) , Gratlspitze (1899 m) , Loderstein (1830 m) Towards the south of the Alpbach Valley at Wiedersberger Horn, there is a family ski area with 3 cable cars and 22 chair lifts. The Alpbach Valley ski terrain is divided into two areas. One is Wiedersbergerhorn, The other ski area is near Reither Kogl, which has a family-friendly 8-person cable car. There are also ideal slopes for beginners. There are a total of 20 ski lifts and 45 km of slopes, of which approx. 31 km are covered with artificial snow using over 58 snow canons.
Alpach cannot claim great snow reliability but two thirds of the pistes are covered by snowmaking. The base area can get a little congested in the morning.
Experts - limited in a word but there are a number of reds and 3 blacks through the trees to challenge you. Head off piste down to Hygna with a guide and you'll have something a bit more challenging. The off-piste beneath the Wiederbergerhorn towards the Inneralpback base and the Wiedersbergerhorn black runs are also great.
Intermediate - OK so there are only 45km of pistes so it's not a high mileage resort however the slopes are varied and and underated. When conditions are ok you can go off piste to the small neighbouring resort of Reith im Alpbachtal. Intermediates slopes are classified red. There are some really good long tree lined red runs across the whole area with some fantastic views.
Beginners - there are a couple of sunny pleasant really easy slopes at each end of the village to try your first turns on. You can also be taken by a 5 mins bus ride to Wiedersbergerhorn where the gondola takes you up to further slopes a the 'Horn Boden'. If you are staying in Inneralpbach - a small hamlet 3km from the main village you will find the nursery slopes on your doorstep.
Cross Country - 22km of pretty cross country trails to amuse you. Snowboarders - there are some decent terrain for the free riders amongst you whilst the terrain park has a half pipe although some boarders have complained about maintenance. They have lplayed host to teh ISD World Pro Tour so it's not all doom and gloom.

Ski runs in Alpbach Knowing where to start...beginners and new comers, intermediates and experts usually head up to the Wiedersbergerhornbahn ski gondolas in the main part of the village of Alpbach. The Wiedersbergerhornbahn ski gondola has an intermediate station with a red run that leads to the base of the station - be careful though; this run can often be quite icy.
- For all keen experts the Inneralpbach black ski run starts at the top of the Wiedersbergerhorn and progresses right down to the base ski station. Measuring 1050m/3,440ft; the Inneralpbach black run is not for the faint hearted!
- The Gmahbahn chairlift takes you to a ridge half way down the mountain; providing intermediates with a picturesque red run with fantastic views.
- The Kohlgruben chairlift - another great red run; not very long but definitely a hit with the intermediate skiers.
- The Mulden draglift - a blue run here; great for beginners. It has a slight gadient making it popular with ski schools and groups learning together.
- Our final ski runs can be accessed by taking either the Horn 2000 or the Brandegg chairlifts: both of these lead you to a fantastic black run for keen and expert skiiers and snowboarders whilst a red run nearby leads down to Inneralpbach.
Many of the routes we've mentioned above provide great powder skiing when in good conditions. Alpbach does offer great skiing in scenic and picturesque surroundings; however, Snowbrainer feel that it it is more for beginners and intermediates, whilst experts may not find this resort as challenging as others; the few black runs that are available will provide great skiing and snowboarding for keen winter sports action!
